Whether your teenager is grappling with anxiety, school, their self-esteem, or friends, the emotions that come up can take a toll on their mental health, leaving them feeling alone in their struggles.

Her focus on supporting neurodivergent youth and their families during her teaching career gives her additional insight into the specific struggles teens encounter with school, as well as a deep understanding of the tools that would be most helpful.​

When working with teens, building a trusting relationship is paramount. Teens may not want to talk about personal issues with a stranger, so the first and most important phase of therapy will be showing your teen that no matter what they tell us, we won't gasp in shock, lecture, or scold. 

Learning Coping Strategies

Just like adults, teens can experience some pretty significant stressors, and schools rarely teach teens how to handle them. Through therapy, your teen will learn healthy coping skills so they know how to respond when an issue arises without resorting to unhealthy behaviours like drinking and drug use.

Building Healthy Self-Esteem

Adolescence is a common time for self-esteem to drop, often because of peer pressure and bullying, and therapy helps teens improve their self-image. Your teen will learn how to challenge negative thoughts, build self-compassion, and cultivate healthy friendships and relationships.

Q: Will my parents be involved in my therapy sessions?

Your privacy and confidentiality will be the most important thing to us, so if we feel it would be beneficial to invite your parent to a session, we would discuss it with you first. You will always have the right to discuss boundaries and preferences regarding how involved your parents are with your therapy.

Q: How do I find a therapist I feel comfortable with?

One of the most important factors in successful therapy is finding the right therapist for you! When looking for a therapist, consider factors like their areas of specialization, approach, personality, and availability. The best thing to do is schedule a 15-minute consultation with your potential therapist to see if you connect with them.

Q: Will you tell my parents what I say in session?

​

This is a question many teens have, and it's a very good one! Maintaining your confidentiality is one of your therapist's most important jobs, as we have strict standards we have to follow to protect your privacy. What you discuss in therapy sessions will be kept confidential, even from your parents, except in very specific circumstances where there may be a risk of harm to yourself or others. Your therapist will explain confidentiality to you during your first session, and we encourage you to ask any questions you have!
